— Bruce Mau once said “our work exists between the purity of invention and the contamination of compromise” but I’ve always found compromise to be the greatest display of empathy in what we do.

rory.k.mcharg is a creative director originating from the motherland of Aotearoa (aka New Zealand)
For the past 19 years, I have worked with brands that I admire, pushing them to create deeper, more meaningful stories that transcend beyond the products and services they offer.
I believe deeply in the concept and business workstream of brand as publisher. The power of sustained content - a media mix of film, editorial, documentary, and social outweighs the usual campaign spike most brands still adhere to.
Since I was eight years old (before I knew its name), I discovered a love for typography and the craft of making letterforms with a personality. That love has never gone away. My creative ethos lies at the heart of this concept: an intersection between personality and craftsmanship.
I grew up in a small fruit farming town in New Zealand before studying design and visual communication. In my mid-twenties, with about 6K to my name, I made the move to London to pursue the idea of becoming a proper art director. Five years later, I moved to New York where I met my wife, a Detroiter.
I’m an Emmy award-winning Creative Director currently at Woodward Original in Detroit, before that I’ve held CD posts at VICE & the creative agency VIRTUE in NYC for 5 years, and Story London and New York for 7 years. I don’t like to bounce around too much though.
I also created the clothing line RampOrRye, as a side hustle.
